ABOUT CESIF-Nepal

CESIF Nepal is a not-for profit, autonomous and independent private research institution serving in the public interest, with significant independence from any donor or interest group and autonomy from government.

VISION/MISSION

Our mission is to help the government and the society create a democratic, secure and just society by making informed and transparent decisions about policies and practices.

STRATEGY
  1. Generate and Communicate: Generate and communicate informed research, analysis and debate about policies and practices to the public and the policymakers in a language that is understandable, reliable and accessible.
  2. Bridge: Act as a bridge between the academic and policymaking communities and between the state and civil society.
  3. Serve: Serve in the public interest as an independent and credible voice.
THE GOAL
  1. Research and Analysis
    • Develop expertise on the five thematic areas for the first five years.
    • Generate high quality research and analysis.
  2. Communication and Public Engagement
    • Effectively communicate to the public and to policy-makers.
    • Engage and bring together the academic and policy-making communities, the state and civil society on public policy research, analysis and debate.
    • Carry out a flagship dialogue event every year for branding and visibility.
  3. Collaboration and Partnership: Collaborate and partner with other think tanks in Nepal and Asia (e.g., to help communicate their research, to participate in each others’ events, or to exchange ideas or learnings).
  4. Others
    • Recruit or work with the sharpest and most informed minds available in Nepal and elsewhere.
    • Makes use of latest information and technology.
    • Makes use of monitoring, evaluation and learning.
OBJECTIVES

Conduct research on five thematic areas:

  1. Keep track of latest developments in the thematic areas by tracking media reports, government documents, and, where necessary, conducting direct interviews with experts/stakeholders and taking part in related seminars and workshops. Analyze developments on a weekly basis based on the weekly updates and timelines. Generate policy questions.
  2. Select, after collective discussion, a topic for further research. Conduct a literature review and prepare a background document.
  3. Collect further data and conduct interviews to prepare a policy brief, research report or a working paper.


Foster interactive and constructive dialogue between researchers, professionals, policy-makers, opinion leaders and activists.

Dialogue and Events

  1. Flagship dialogue every year in collaboration with a regional partner.
  2. Monthly dialogues and events series on selected topics including briefs or working papers.

Collaboration and Partnership

  1. Take part in events and dialogues conducted by partner organizations. (20/year)
  2. Flagship dialogue every year in collaboration with a regional partner. (1/year)


Others:

  1. Recruitment of and partnership with the best minds.
  2. Make a strategy for incorporation of digital technology and data analysis techniques. (One strategy paper)
  3. Self-monitoring reports. (Monthly. Listing activities and outputs achieved, with a brief mention of impact, if any.) (12/year for each staff).

                              Pooja Gautam

                              Monitoring & Evaluation Officer

                              Pooja is working as an administrative staff in Centre for Social Inclusion and Federalism (CESIF). She is also a lecturer of Business Studies. She is a management student and is completing her thesis for her master’s degree in Business Studies. She loves to travel different places.

                              Arpan Gelal

                              Program Officer/Researcher

                              Arpan completed Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters Degree in International
                              Development Studies (GLODEP) with honours from multiple universities of
                              Czech Republic, France and Italy, fully funded by the European Union. He
                              completed undergraduate in Development Studies with Vice chancellor Gold
                              Medal and Nepal Bidhya Bhusan Padak. He has worked as freelance
                              consultant for various development related assignments. He is also a
                              faculty for development studies at National College, Kathmandu
                              University.

                              Yunish Ghimire

                              Junior Research Fellow

                              Yunish is currently pursuing his master’s degree in Human and Natural Resource Studies from Kathmandu University (KU). Previously, he worked for Diinsider, an organization based in Manilla, Philippines as a global correspondent to Nepal. He works for CESIF, covering National Security and Climate Change issues. He is passionate about climate justice issues.

                              Niyati Adhikari

                              Junior Research Fellow

                              Niyati is a lawyer with a Master’s degree in International Criminal Law and International Human Rights Law from Bangor University, UK. She has been a goodwill ambassador for an NGO named Cameroon Association of Active Youths (CAMMAY) in Cameroon, where she advocated and worked for securing the livelihood of the refugees and the Internally Displaced Persons affected by the armed conflict. At CESIF Nepal, she researches the thematic area of Human Rights and Social Inclusion/Exclusion.

                               

                              Shraddha Ghimire

                              Junior Research Fellow

                              Shraddha Ghimire is currently working as a Junior Research Fellow at Centre for Social Inclusion and Federalism (CESIF) under the thematic area ‘Economy and Development’. She has completed her a bachelors in economics (with honors) from Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University, India and holds an ISS master certificate in International Development Studies from University of Oslo, Norway. Her keen interest lies in development economics and international trade, alongside researching and writing about economic development and contemporary issues in Nepal.

                              Rojina Neupane

                              Finance Officer

                              Rojina is currently pursuing her Master’s degree in Business Administration specializing in finance. She has experience in managing accounts and finances in finance and trading companies. She is passionate about travelling, hiking and exploring new places.

                              Lumana Upreti

                              Junior Research Fellow

                              Lumana Upreti is a graduate at West Bengal National University of Juridical Science. She currently works at CESIF under the theme of International Relations and Foreign Affairs. She enjoys researching by directly engaging with communities and stakeholders.

                              Prashanti Poudyal

                              Communications Officer

                              After having completed her Masters in Development and Governance as a DAAD scholar, Prashanti joined CESIF Nepal in the capacity of Communications Officer. She has previously worked as a journalist and has authored a script for a romantic comedy series called ‘Maya Bhanne Cheez Yestai Ho’ that aired on AP1 television.

                              Shaleen Shah has a Masters Degree in Data Journalism from Columbia University, New York. He has interest on data analysis and national issues. He currently works at CESIF under the theme of governance and corruption.

                              Shuvangi Poudyal has a Masters Degree in International Relations and Political Science from The University of Warwick, United Kingdom. She also has a Bachelors Degree in Journalism and Mass Communication from Amity University, Noida. She has a passion for cinema and photography. She also enjoys reading philosophy and writing poetry.

                              Shraddha has a Bachelors in Economics with Honors from Lady Shri Ram College for Women. She covers International Relations for CESIF and is passionate about studying it further. She likes analyzing the critical Nepal-India and Nepal-China relations in particular.

                              Junior Research Fellow

                              Mahesh Kushwaha was born in a small village of Bara, Nepal. He graduated from Soka University of America, California, where he studied Politics and International Relations. Since moving back to Nepal, Kushwaha has been working as a researcher at CESIF, covering politics-related issues. Besides his interest in academic research, Kushwaha enjoys traveling, taking photos, writing, and playing chess.

                              Junior Research Fellow

                              Phiroj is from Rautahat and has completed his Masters in Sociology from Tribhuvan University. He has worked as a trainee for11 months in UNRCO in Kathmandu. The knowledge he gained is also through the experience that he gathered by working in multiple research organizations. He currently works at CESIF under the theme of federalism.  He likes to work in research as a professional, by directly engaging with communities.

                              Senior Research Fellow

                              Graduate in International Relations from International University of Japan with more than 12 years of experience in the development sector of Nepal. Has contributed for the common good in various sectors including Media, Infrastructure Development, Hydroelectricity, Mental Health, Disability, Social Protection, Public Works, Employment, and E-Governance. Believes in designing a sustainable future for all through appropriate policy formulations and programs delivery. His research interests include International Relations and Diplomacy with a focus on interconnections and National Security with a focus on food, water and energy security.

                              Former Ambassador to Denmark (2008-2012), Vijay Kant Karna is a professor of political science at Tribhuvan University. He is currently the executive chairman of CESIF. His interests include working for marginalized communities including Madhesis, Dalits, Tharus, Muslims and Janajatis.

                              Research Director

                              Ajaya Bhadra Khanal is a former Editor of The Himalayan Times, an English broadsheet daily published from Kathmandu. In addition to high-level academic and practical trainings in the US, he has more than 25 years’ experience as a journalist in Nepal in various institutions, capped by inside involvement in conflict transformation. Since the last two years, he has been carrying out research on corruption, impunity, governance and national security interests. He is currently engaged in an initiative against corruption and impunity. His long term interest is academic research and public engagement aimed at enabling communities and national political institutions enforce rule of law and promote democracy.
