COVID tally: According to the health ministry, as of January 27, Nepal’s Covid-19 tally stands at 270,092 and the death tally has reached 2,017. There are 3,252 active cases of infection in the country while 264,823 people have made a recovery.
COVID immunization: According to reports, Nepal is set to kick off the first phase of the nationwide covid-19 immunization drive from January 27. “Around 430,000 front liners including health workers, supporting staffers at health facilities, female community health volunteers, security personnel, sanitation workers, elderly people living in care homes, and prisoners will start getting inoculated in 65 districts across the country”. The virus has claimed the lives of 2,017 people and has infected 270,092 people in the country thus far. India provided the vaccines under grant assistance.
Doubts on the vaccine: Front line workers have expressed doubts about the quality of the Covishield vaccines provided by India under a grant. According to reports, since COVID-19 vaccines were developed unconventionally and under a short period of time, misinformation and rumors have eroded public confidence in the vaccines. WHO has stated that “It is important to build trust in the COVID-19 vaccines before people form an opinion against them.”
Bomb Diffused: A pressure cooker bomb was diffused in Banepa Bazar in Kavrepalanchowk district on Jan 23. According to reports, the bomb was planted by the outlawed fringe of CPN (Maoists) led by Netra Bikram Chand, also known as Biplab. A bomb disposal team of Nepal Army diffused the bomb on the Araniko Highway after receiving an alert that such bombs had been planted in several locations.
