Advocacy for Climate Crisis

On 29th November, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda visited Dubai to attend the Conference of Parties on Climate Change (COP28), where he highlighted the adverse impacts of climate change and the need for urgent action. He said the Himalayas are melting rapidly, causing serious damage and affecting the livelihoods of people. According to the PM, Nepal is committed to climate action and has set ambitious goals for clean energy and net zero emissions.

Youths risk their life in war-torn countries

On November 29, Nepali Embassy in Moscow confirmed the death of three Nepali youths serving in the Russian Army. In December, Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a press release saying a total of six Nepali youths have died fighting in the Russian-Ukraine war. The press release also stated the captivity of one Nepali national by Ukraine.

Nepali Nationals can join the Indian and British armies and serve as UN peacekeepers. Besides that, joining foreign armies is illegal. However, many Nepali nationals have been migrating illegally to join the armies of foreign states. In order to stop such illegal migration, the government of Nepal needs to create economic opportunities in Nepal for their citizens.

Further distress for the earthquake-affected

Media reported that three people displaced by the recent Jajarkot earthquake have died from cold-related ailments and many more are suffering. An earthquake of 6.4 magnitude, with its epicenter in Jajarkot, had jolted the Karnali Province on November 5. Since then, multiple shocks have been felt by the people in Karnali Province.

The government has improved its immediate rescue operations. However, it hasn’t been able to improve the disaster management system, including distribution of relief. Multiple relief aids and assistance have arrived in Nepal, however there is a lack of effective distribution.
